Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Training in Defense

In the last decade, most developed countries and developing nations have adapted to using VR and AR for their defence systems such as armed, marine and air forces – where the VR and AR modules are being used for special training purposes to avoid physical ailments. To be precise, VR and AR training aid armed forces to get used to combat/war situations and react spontaneously to enemies reactions without the risk of losing their lives.
AR training is primarily used to enable tailored battlefield visualisations, warfare simulations, spatial orientation, weapons targeting, situational awareness, digital terrains and a few other custom-made environments. According to research by Goldman Sachs, the VR/AR industry is set to generate over USD 1.2 billion in revenues, especially from the defence sector, within 2025.

Challenges that VR and AR Cope with Defence Sector

Both new and emerging VR and AR technologies have helped resolve the pain points of defence training for years. The following are some of the prominent solutions offered by VR and AR training modules:
1.Unique Experience to Trainees:
While most conservative training environments fail to provide trainees with the real combat-field experience, VR offers an immersive 360 degrees environment that helps trainees experience the field in real-time with 100% safety.
VR also provide options to take up digital-based training by aiding defence personnel to interact with guns, machines, heavy equipment and other combat vehicles in a controlled environment with multi-user and immersive experiences.
2.Scalable Training Environment:
Unlike other sectors, the defence sector requires training people in large troops or personnel in a given time. Since it is tedious to construct a physical environment, VR and AR training modules are being used to train defence personnel seamlessly. Guess what? VR and AR modules ensure consistency in training across 100s of defence personnel at the same time whilst providing options to monitor, track and evaluate an individual’s performance.
3.Cost-effective Method:
Training with actual inventories requires vehicles, weapons and ammunition. Eventually, this will cost a lump sum for procuring the necessary materials for training 1000s of personnel. By implementing VR and AR technology in training, the defence sector could bring down the cost drastically to enable a seamless and immersive training experience. For instance, the fuel re-fill cost of fighter jets cost over 3,00,000 rupees for each fly time; thus, the fighter planes training cost is expensive. When replaced with a VR flight simulator, trainers can train 100s of personnel simultaneously with reduced training and fuel cost.
4.Tracking & Engagement:
With Augmented & Virtual Reality training modules, defence instructors can monitor and track real-time performance data of each trainee, allowing them to provide suggestions and feedback instantly based on their specific movements during training. Besides, VR training method helps trainees to identify their weaknesses and strengths to re-train a specific set of training tasks.
Almost all VR and AR training modules offer an immersive environment that enables users to feel the environment in real-time. In the end, virtual training modules translates into in-depth understanding and better engagement.
