About the Client :
The Indian Army is the world’s third largest standing army. Indian Army Armored Corps is the Armored Vehicles division of the Indian Army, operating a wide variety of armoured vehicles in the APC and MBT range such as BMP II, T90, T72, Arjun Mk I, Arjun Mk II A etc.
Project Requirements :
Traditionally Armored vehicles have always traded off visibility and situational awareness for armor protection and have had the disadvantages of a limited field of view offered by Periscopes.
Added to that, the systems haven’t caught up with time respect to Digital Data sharing such as Navigational Data, Ballistic Data, Battlefield Management Systems.
The Indian Army also has plans to convert conventional armored vehicles into Remote Controlled armored vehicles for next generation warfare.
Added to that, with a lot of experienced workers moving out of the system due to retirement also lead to asymmetric challenges in the skill development plans.
XR Labs Solution :
Indian Army as part of the IDEX Defense Innovation Challenge awarded the consortium of Big Bang Boom Solutions and XR Labs to design, build and deploy a See Through Armor Solution for the Indian Armored Platforms that is inter-usable between the APCs and the MBTs.
The consortium successfully designed and built the solution that integrates innumerable technologies such as
- Material Design for External Enclosures, Sensor Fusion for managing high definition high bitrate video feed from 12 Cameras ( 6 RGB and 6 Thermal ) in real time
- Advanced Augmented Reality display for the commander, implementing AR Heads Up Display of critical battlefield management data, navigational data, ballistic data etc directly onto the Commander’s Feed.
- Seamless Stitching Technology to fuse the feed from the six cameras in real time
- Military Grade Electronics suited for Ingress and EMF Protection
- Ensuring High Modularity and Inter-usability between the APC and MBT Platforms.
Throughout the Project, the consortium also developed innovative R&D pipelines such as Virtual Prototyping in Virtual Reality to test the Camera placements, assembly ergonomics and many other theories to reduce the time and cost of Research and Development.
